He conducts workshops and provides individual consultations for any academic and learning issues, and coordinates general and unit-specific learning skills workshops. He was awarded his PhD in 1991 and plays a key role in providing discipline-specific support for programs in Nursing and Education.

Phillip teaches in credit-bearing units such as TLC120 Introduction to University Learning and has been instrumental in developing and coordinating the online offering of this unit through Open University Australia. In addition, he has taught at Challenger TAFE and been an education officer for the Museum of Western Australia.

An active scientist and member of the Australian Science Communicators, Phillip has worked both locally and internationally as a consultant and researcher. His interests include scientific communication, the influence of captivity on wildlife and the interaction between humans, non-human animals and the environment. His other notable work includes ongoing investigations of Rattlesnake Roundups in the USA, the exotic animal trade and conservation within tropical cloud rainforests.
