Marian Kemp

Senior Lecturer in Numeracy – Student Learning

Room 4.12, Level 4, Library
Email: M.Kemp@murdoch.edu.au
Phone: +61 8 9360 2854

Marian, Head of Student Learning, is the lecturer in numeracy. She provides group and individual support for students in the areas of mathematics, statistics and numeracy. This involves mathematics and statistics related to first year mathematics and statistics units, as well as the not always so obvious mathematical needs in non-mathematical units, such as psychology, education, commerce and environmental science.

A major part of the focus of the position and of Marian's research interest is to look at the numeracy requirements of the non-mathematical units at the tertiary level and to develop appropriate mathematical support. The foundation units provide an excellent vehicle to start developing students' critical reading skills and to encourage them to think critically about the quantitative aspects of the text that they encounter both at university and in their everyday lives. Marian is developing ways of encouraging students to use these skills in other units.

Marian has previously taught in Murdoch's School of Education and has more than two decades experience in teaching mathematics and numeracy in Britain, Nigeria, Jamaica and Australia.
