TLC277 From University to Workplace

TLC277 is a 4 credit point elective unit that provides theoretical and practical knowledge about the world of work to enhance students' career development and their transition to the culture of the workplace. It is available to students from all disciplines across the university.

Many students are unsure of how to approach the job market, how to set career goals and start on the right road to achieving those goals. This unit does not assume that students know which field of work they would like to enter. It will enable students to identify and research a potential field of work and become involved in networking in that field.

As members of the local and global community, students are introduced to how large and small organisations recruit, select and retain personnel. The unit examines relevant concepts and workplace policies and practices, and includes significant input from industry. The practical component of the unit complements the theoretical aspects, it develops skills and confidence to enhance employment prospects and provides strategies for using the knowledge and skills gained at university.

TLC277 brings together your self awareness and your understanding of the workplace to facilitate managing your career, a process that began when you enrolled at Murdoch University and which will continue for the rest of your life.

The unit includes a one hour lecture and a two hour tutorial. Students enrol online.

Unit Objectives

The overall aim of the unit is to improve students' ability to make key choices in their lives. This broad aim is supported by:

  • Increasing students awareness of what constitutes 'work' through historical/political/sociological analyses
  • Examining the place of work in the lives of individuals, families, communities and nations
  • Appraising the effects of globalization and its impact on working lives
  • Understanding the changes intrinsic to the 'Knowledge Age'
  • Making students aware of resources available to them, both within themselves and in the world which can improve their decision making skills
  • Providing students with strategies for pursuing and gaining meaningful paid employment
  • Improving students' self confidence and oral communication skills in an interview
  • Honing and polishing students' written communication skills.
