Students beginning tertiary study, whether mature aged or school leavers, are moving into a new way of life and a new culture. Sympathetic guidance and help adjusting to the conventions and values of this culture is provided by Murdoch University's compulsory Foundation Units. These units are based on a commitment to students achieving their full academic potential through a strong and positive introduction to tertiary study.

Students who have done well in other educational settings and those who are keen to focus on their chosen field of study may question the benefit of being required to study a Foundation Unit. Some students are concerned that they may not have chosen the right unit and others do not understand the interdisciplinary approach of these units. This video addresses these concerns, and highlights the advantages of taking a broad perspective and building a solid foundation for successful tertiary study. The video also introduces the features of Foundation Units, their purpose and the concepts of life long learning, interdisciplinarity and independent study.

Although students beginning university anticipate a challenge, many don't realise that University learning can expand their ideas and shake them out of their comfort zones. This video prepares students for the way Foundation Units present ideas and concepts that may confront their accepted ways of seeing the world. In an informative and entertaining way it brings these challenges into context by relating them to the professional requirements on graduates today.

This video can be used with internal and external students as an introduction to Foundation Units at Murdoch and to facilitate tutorial discussion about student concerns.
