Numeracy/Science for Education/Introduction to Teaching
The Student Learning Centre section is unusual in Australian and overseas universities in that provision
for numeracy support is situated alongside support in other skills. The numeracy position has a two-fold
purpose, to support students in mathematics and statistics in various disciplines and to develop critical
numeracy skills for all students. Elsewhere in Australia support in mathematics and statistics is located
solely in Mathematics centres, while the notion of critical numeracy in reading is largely ignored.
The Murdoch model is based on the premise that critical numeracy is as crucial as literacy skills.
One way that numeracy skills are developed for all Murdoch students is through the numeracy components
in foundation units, which have been designed by the Senior Lecturer in Numeracy, Marian Kemp. She
also provides group and individual support to students in numeracy.
Chemistry support classes for PEC140 Introduction to Chemistry will be conducted on Thursdays between 12.30 - 1.20 pm
In addition, Help classes are available for students enrolled in EDU113 Introduction to Science and EDU101 Introduction to Teaching in the School of Education.
Unless listed otherwise, all Help Classes this semester will be held in either Room 2.005C or Room 2.005D on Level 2 in the northwest section of the Library Learning Common or in Education and Humanities Room 2.028.
