New Look for Unit Materials

The Flexible Learning Implementation Committee has been considering alternative formats for unit materials, such as Unit Readers. The new versions were trialled successfully in semester 2, 2006 in the School of Education. The new format, set out below, has now been approved by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Jan Thomas. The new format will not cost more to print than the current format. It does not apply to Unit Information and Learning Guides.

The new 'look' includes a Murdoch-branded colour glossy cover, with a different colour scheme for each school. The look is more professional than the existing, single colour card covers, but a drawback is that unit coordinators can no longer include their own graphics on the cover. These can, however, be used on the title page.

A second change, to save labour costs, is to phase out the use of coloured inserts for sections of a document. Instead, Murdoch Print staff will produce 'index tabs' on the edge of pages in each section. Murdoch Print staff have also been removing photocopy marks from scanned articles and generally improving print quality.

The third change removes any time-specific information from cover sheets, so materials can be reused if extra stock remains. Information specific to a teaching period (such as Semester 2, 2006) should no longer be displayed. Instead, the 'edition' or date of printing will be displayed with a copyright notice on page 2. See an example.

To comply with the "moral rights of attribution" provisions of the Copyright Act, page 2 also needs to refer to any compilers or authors of the materials. See below. You can download a Word template of the cover pages.

Various alternatives are shown in the table below. These details need to be included within all versions of documents, including Unit Information and Learning Guides and online formats. If you are involved in revising, editing, collating or copying of these documents you need to ensure that references to the authors/compilers are appropriately preserved in the document. The following table outlines the options.

Document Scenario Attribution Text

For units in WebCT, this information should be included as follows:
