Academic Council Resolution 167/02
6575. Graduate Attributes at Murdoch University Report
[Meeting date: 6-11-2002]
Members were advised that the report summarised
the progress that had been made on graduate attributes using the Teaching
Development Fund. It was also noted that the 2004 Academic Planning Guidelines
request graduate attribute maps.
In considering the recommendations, it was noted that the Guidelines
for School Reviews already refer to graduate attributes, and that recommendation
4 was therefore redundant. The draft motion was amended accordingly.
Suggestions included the addition of information and communication technology
skills and numeracy as attributes and that discipline profiles should
be developed.
RESOLVED:
to adopt the recommendations in the report ‘Graduate Attributes
at Murdoch University’ (as revised):
1. That Academic Council show strong in-principle support for the continuation
of the Graduate Attribute process, that the Senior Executive be asked
to ensure that these efforts be given priority in the University through
the Strategic Plan, and Executive Deans and Head of School be asked to
encourage and support staff in the mapping and unit/course redesign process.
2. That Academic Council recommend to the Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic)
that Divisions not be required to provide matching funds for 2003 TDF
grants pertaining to Graduate Attributes.
3. That Academic Council establish a Working Party to:
Re-examine the list of Graduate Attributes in the light of feedback from
staff and the new Strategic Plan.
Examine whether the Attributes that address generic skills should be
treated differently from the Attributes that address values and attitudes,
for example, should certain attributes be frames as ‘gained’ (or ‘all
graduates must have’) and other attributes as ‘all graduates
must be exposed to’.
Explore how the University might approach assessment of the Graduate
Attributes and how this might impact on the ‘Code of Practice – Assessment’.
Examine the relationship between Graduate Attributes and the new Strategic
Plan, and the Graduate Skills Assessment and the Course Experience Questionnaire.
4. That the Flexible Learning Implementation Committee examine how the
Graduate Attributes and Flexible Delivery process can be aligned.
The President thanked Associate Professor Marshall and her team for their
efforts.
