Harmony Day
21 March 2006
Murdoch University in collaboration with all other WA Universities organise the annual
WA Vice-Chancellors' Oration to commemorate this day.
Harmony Day is celebrated Australia-wide on the 21st of March each year to commemorate the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Harmony Day was born out of the Federal Government's "Living in Harmony" Initiative. It highlights the importance of inclusiveness and provides us with an opportunity to re-commit ourselves to respect, goodwill and promoting understanding among cultures. Most significantly, it provides us with an opportunity to understand racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance and ultimately to say no to racism.
During this period Western Australians join together to celebrate Harmony Week. Higher education institutions, schools, businesses, non-government orgnisations, faith communities and Western Australians from all walks of life take part in activities that help to:
Build a peaceful and productive future for our children through example;
Make the most of our racial, social, cultural and religious diversity; AND
Practice traditional values of justice, equality, fairness and friendship.
