Recognition of excellence
The Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Supervision Awards confirm the commitment of Murdoch University to encourage, recognise and reward sustained excellence in postgraduate research supervision.

Two awards of $4,000 each, funded by the Research and Development Board, are available per year. One award will be made to staff in the Divisions of Health Sciences and DSE, and one will be awarded to staff in the Division of Arts and the Teaching & Learning Centre.

Recipients will receive a certificate to be presented at a graduation ceremony at the beginning of the academic year. Recipients will be expected to make a presentation at a workshop on postgraduate research student supervision during the academic year.


Nominations

Postgraduate research students are encouraged to nominate academics whom they consider to demonstrate excellence in the supervision of a postgraduate research student's degree (Phd, MPhil, LLM (Research) EdD, Research Masters (with training)). A student may only nominate one supervisor per year.

Eligibility

All academic staff (not including Emeritus and Adjunct staff) employed at Murdoch University who have current supervisory responsibility for at least one postgraduate research student, and who have supervised at least one student to successful completion of a postgraduate research degree are eligible for nomination. Co-supervision is an eligible supervisory responsibility. No person may receive an Award more than once every five years. Previous winners are listed here.

Criteria

The Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Supervision Awards recognise sustained excellence in postgraduate research student supervision. The selection committee will address the following criteria where they are applicable to the supervision activities of the nominee:

Supervision philosophy - the principles considered by the nominee to be relevant to their postgraduate research student supervision practices.

Supervision practices - current and recent responsibilities and practices in postgraduate research student supervision. Evidence of excellence in supervision practices, including the practical implementation of the supervision philosophy. This category could include evidence of negotiated frameworks for supervision activities, scheduling of activities, accessibility, sharing of knowledge, sharing of enthusiasm, mentoring, encouragement of independence of thought and inquiry, encouragement of analysis and problems solving, quality of interaction, clear and effective communication, development of generic skills with students, assistance with career development of students.

Reflection, analysis and communication of supervision practices - evidence of evaluation and improvement of supervision practices, enthusiasm for and commitment to professional development in supervision within the school or university, mentoring of colleagues, encouragement of collaborative activities, development and communication of materials, tools or techniques to improve the supervision and training of research students.

Submissions

Submissions should include:

  • A one or two page CV which contains information on degrees held with dates awarded, nominee's relevant positions with dates. Publications that relate to supervision and/or published with students (if any);
  • Only publications relevant to supervision or illustrating joint publication with students should be included;
  • A submission addressing the selection criteria listed below (not to exceed 6 pages) that is 2 pages on each selection criteria maximum;
  • A list of postgraduate research students supervised, students completed, and non-completions;
  • Contact information for two academic staff referees familiar with the supervision practices of the nominee and one current or former postgraduate research student of the nominee: and,
  • A LIST ONLY of supporting documentation and supervision materials that can be made available to the committee on request.

Relevant factors

Applicants are assessed on the basis of the nominations, submissions, written references and statements, seminar and interview only. The selection committee may seek confidential written statements from any appropriate referee. One Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Supervision Award will recognise a member of staff in the Divisions of Health Sciences and DSE, and one will be awarded to staff in the Division of Arts and non-Divisional staff (including the Teaching & Learning Centre and Kulbardi Centre) Other than this requirement, the distribution of awards to particular schools or Divisions will not be taken into account.

Payment of Award

The award will be paid into a research account and may be used for any approved research or research training purpose, including research or conference travel, equipment, research maintenance etc.

Procedure for 2007

1. Nominations should be submitted on the printed nomination form which is available for downloading from the TLC website: [rtf] [pdf] [web]

It is also available in print at the Teaching and Learning Centre, North Wing, Level 4, Library Building.

Nominations must be submitted to the TLC by Thursday 6th September 2007.
Nominations are confidential and not to be shown to supervisors.

2. Nominations may be submitted by current students or students successfully completed within the previous 24 months. Nominated staff considered to be eligible for the award will be invited to indicate their willingness to be considered as a possible candidate, and notified of the selection process and criteria.

3. The selection process is as follows:

a. Nominees who wish to be considered as a candidate will be asked to provide a submission addressing the selection criteria and providing the information requested.

b. A Selection Committee will shortlist candidates.

The Selection Committee will consist of:

The Vice Chancellor's representative as Chair;
A postgraduate student representative as appointed by the Vice Chancellor;
One nominee from each Division;
A nominee of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research); and,
A nominee of the Teaching and Learning Centre.

c. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Selection Committee. The committee may recommend to the Vice Chancellor the award of certificates of excellence in supervision, in addition to the recommendations for the Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Supervision Awards.

4. Candidates will be notified of the decisions after these have been approved by the Vice Chancellor.

5. Certificates will be awarded at a graduation ceremony.

Nomination and Selection Process Timeline

Date Activity
Thursday 6th September Closing date for nominations by postgraduate students.
Friday 14th September Advise academic staff and Executive Deans of staff nominations.
Friday 28th September Due date for Supervision Award submissions by nominees.
Wednesday 3rd October Committee members receive submissions to rate prior to meeting during the week of 8th October.
Week of 8th October Selection Committee meets to shortlist up to 10 candidates.
Advise successful shortlisted candidates.
Week of 8th October Advise Executive Deans of successful shortlisted candidates and send them a copy of submission for comment by Wednesday 24th October.
Week of 29th October Shortlisted candidates take part in a brief interview with the Selection Committee.
Chair to forward nominated candidates to VC for endorsement.
Week of 5th November VC to send out letters to successful candidates.
