Recipients of 2007 Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Supervision Awards

Murdoch University is committed to maintaining a productive research culture. This requires a pool of talented postgraduate research students that, in turn, necessitates quality research supervision.

The Vice-Chancellor's Excellence in Supervision Awards supports Murdoch's commitment to sustained excellence in postgraduate research supervision.

Two awards are made each year - one to staff in the Division of Health Sciences and Science & Engineering and one to staff in the Division of Arts and the Teaching & Learning Centre.

The winners of the Awards for 2007 are Professor Andrew Thompson and Associate Professor Lance Fung

Professor Andrew Thompson, School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences

Professor Andrew Thompson has established a world-renowned research program at Murdoch, and the large group of postgraduate students he supervises is an essential element of this program. Through the extensive links he has developed worldwide, Professor Thompson is able to identify funding support and placements for successful PhD students. He is also a strong advocate of postgraduate students, aiming to ensure each becomes an independent high quality researcher.

Associate Professor Lance Fung, School of Information Technology

Associate Professor Lance Fung is well known for taking on international students from a wide range of countries. He has developed a thoughtful and effective approach to supervision which overcomes many of the difficulties inherent in supervising students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Associate Professor Fung has a strong commitment to the individual student and the place of research within their wider life, resulting in a number of successful students recommending Murdoch to their colleagues as an excellent place to undertake their postgraduate studies.
