Flexible Unit Model

Students are increasingly requesting more flexibility in the way they study. Academic Council has approved the implementation of an approach to flexible teaching and learning in which a single coherent package of unit materials is available to all students and is accessed by them according to their circumstances.

FLIC Unit Model

The elements of a flexible unit are:

  • Unit Information and Learning Guide (stripped of generic information – template developed by the Teaching and Learning Centre)
  • Unit Welcome Page (online – one available for each unit)
  • Unit Reader available in print form and may also be available through ECMS (Electronic Course Materials Service)
  • Lectopia recordings
  • Online capabilities used as appropriate.

While not all units are able to be accessed entirely flexibly, the flexible model has become the "cultural standard" for the university through a phased transition over the period 2002-2007. For further details refer to: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/admin/cttees/flic/

The Teaching and Learning Centre has developed templates for use with both print and online materials.

  • Unit Information and Learning Guide templates
  • Online unit template – use the Online Unit Request System from the Teaching and Learning tab in the Staff Portal.
