What will be surveyed?

  • Any member of teaching staff may request a survey of their teaching, provided there are more than ten students in the class.
  • Deans may also request a teaching survey for a member of their staff.

What questions will be asked?

  • The teaching questionnaire.

    Questions on this questionnaire -
    • relate to the criteria for assessing items of evidence of teaching that promotes effective learning as identified in Table 2 of the Guidelines for Presentation of a Teaching Portfolio and
    • refer to one person only. Please ensure that students know who the questionnaire refers to and write the teacher's name in the space provided.

Who will be surveyed?

  • Questions on the teaching questionnaire refer to one teacher only.
  • A minimum of 5 hours of class contact is required before students can be expected to comment on an individual's teaching.
  • It needs to be made clear to students who the survey is on.
  • Students should not be expected to complete more than 2 teaching surveys in any unit in one semester. For example, a survey might be undertaken on two lecturers or on one lecturer and the tutors.

When will it be surveyed?

  • Teaching surveys should be undertaken in the middle teaching block of the semester, generally weeks 7 to 11 (new 2008 calendar week numbering)
  • Results will generally be provided to teachers the by the end of the week following administration, allowing them to respond to student suggestions and concerns.
  • Research has shown that students are happy to provide feedback on units and teaching provided they have some evidence that the results are used.

How will it be surveyed?

  • Choose the best time for running the survey and, ideally, respond to the mailbombs that the TLC sends several times earlier in semester.
  • Your questionnaires will be delivered to you to hand out in class.
  • Full instructions on how to administer the questionnaires will be provided.
  • A student should be nominated to collect the questionnaires, sign the instruction/signature sheet, and ensure that they are returned to the TLC for processing
  • If you require further copies of the instruction/signature sheet, click here to download.
