Ways in which online and IMM materials can be used effectively

Online materials can be used effectively in a variety of ways, ranging from the simple to the sophisticated.


     

    Organised information

    An obvious and simple way to use the web for teaching and learning is by making
    information about the overall organisation of the course and its resources more organised
    and accessible to students.

    Practical usage

    Unit materials online:
    ie Unit Information, Lecture notes, Sample exam questions, Additional Reading materials, Information about assignments, Course Calendars, Multimedia learning resources for the course

    Benefits

    Accessibility, ease of updating, distribution

    Applicable to

    Face-to-face and external modes

    Disadvantage

    Print may be more effective

     

    Lesson presentation

    You can improve the effectiveness of the lesson presentation by using online materials,
    during and after the class session.

    Practical usage

    Making lecture notes and sheets, slides, lecture recordings (iLecture) available
    Resources used as demo materials during presentation
    Permanent record
    Printing
    Develops habits of going to the network - incentive required
    Guest speakers, video etc. can be included

    Benefits

    Material available prior to lectures - added learning value
    Followup after lecture, students contribute notes
    Use of highly visual material

    Applicable to

    Face-to-face and external modes

    Disadvantages

    Students need to have attended lecture to understand the context of the material

    Communication

    The online environment can improve communication between teacher and students.

    Practical usage

    Enhanced communication
    1-1 and 1-many communication between teacher and students

    Benefits

    Flexibility
    No need for office hours
    Joint response to multiple emails

    Face-to-face and external modes

    Disadvantages

    Technical problems, management problems, communication-overload problems

     

    Discussion

    The online environment can improve discussion among the students.

    Practical usage

    Bulletin boards, discussion fora, news groups

    Benefits

    Better environment for discussion than lecture theatres
    Contributions can be added after reflection, time to prepare contribution
    Students will participate if part of requirement and is assessable component
    Opportunities for students to moderate discussion

    Applicable to

    Face-to-face and external modes

    Disadvantages

    May be confusing and have multi-level effect
    May be disjointed due to time delays in responses
    Time demands on lecturer - volume
    Skills required for effectively chairing asynchronous discussions

    Benefits

    Can represent things which can’t be easily displayed conventionally.
    Assists students in understanding conceptually difficult topics.

    Applicable to

    Face-to-face mode. Less applicable to external mode due to bandwidth problems

    Disadvantages

    Expensive to produce
