The Australian Learning and Teaching Council offers a wide range of national awards for teaching and
learning:
- 27 Awards for Teaching Excellence worth $25,000 each drawn from teaching staff under eight categories;
- 1 Prime Minister's University Teacher of the Year Award worth $50,000 drawn from the winners of
the Teaching Excellence Awards;
- 14 Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning worth $25,000 each recognising support programs and
services that make an outstanding contribution to the quality of student learning;
- Occasional Career Achievement Award to acknowledge an individual who has made an outstanding contribution
to teaching and learning that is recognised throughout the higher education sector; and
- 210 Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning worth $10,000 each for individuals
or teams that make a significant contribution to the quality of student learning.
Awards for Teaching Excellence
27 awards of $25,000
Twenty-seven individuals and teams across the eight designated categories are selected to attend the
annual awards ceremony at which twenty-seven are presented with a Carrick Award for Teaching Excellence
and one will receive the Prime Minister's Award. These awards celebrate a group of the nation's most
outstanding university teachers in their fields. They give recognition to university teachers renowned
for the excellence of their teaching, who have superb presentation skills and who have made a broad
and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in higher education.
The Teaching Excellence Awards parallel the Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Awards.
The Prime Minister's Award for the Australian University Teacher of the Year
One award of $50,000 and a medal
The Prime Minister's Award for the Australian University Teacher of the Year is awarded to an academic
or team with an exceptional record of advancing student learning, educational leadership and scholarly
contribution to teaching and learning. Each year the winner of the Prime Minister's Award for the Australian
University Teacher of the Year is chosen from the winners of the Teaching Excellence Awards.
In selecting the recipient of the Prime Minister's Award, particular attention will be given to the
evidence provided for Teaching Award criterion five:
Scholarly activities that have influenced and enhanced learning and teaching, including advanced
skills in evaluation and reflective practice, participating in and contributing to professional activities
related to learning and teaching, coordination, management and leadership of courses and student learning,
conducting and publishing research related to teaching, and demonstrating leadership through activities
that have broad influence on the profession.
Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning
14 awards of $25,000
The Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning recognise learning and teaching support programs and
services that make an outstanding contribution to the quality of student learning and the quality of
the student experience of higher education. These 'Carrick Program Awards' are given to exemplary programs
and services whose effectiveness has been demonstrated through strenuous evaluation. The programs and
services that receive these awards set benchmarks for similar activities in other institutions.
The Programs that Enhance Learning Awards are related
to the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for
Excellence in Support Services.
Career Achievement Award
One occasional award
The Career Achievement Award acknowledges an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to
teaching and learning that is recognised throughout the higher education sector. The Carrick Career
Achievement Award is given to individuals whose career achievements in learning and teaching in higher
education have had a major influence and left an enduring legacy.
Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning
210 awards of $10,000
Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning recognise and reward the diverse contributions
that individuals and teams make to the quality of student learning. The 'Carrick Citations' are granted
to people who have made a significant contribution to the quality of student learning in a specific
area of responsibility over a sustained period, whether they are academic staff, general staff, sessional
staff or institutional associates.
The citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning parallel the Vice-Chancellor's citations for
Excellence in Enhancing Learning.
