Academic Women in Leadership and Development (WILD)

Rationale

There is extensive literature that attests to the under representation of women at senior levels in universities across Australia and elsewhere. "It is sometimes thought that because women now make up … more than half of all staff employed in Australian universities, that gender equity in Australian higher education is no longer an issue which requires attention. However despite recent gains in women's participation in universities, as both staff and students, significant gender differences remain" (Carrington and Pratt 2003:1). More is needed if we are to achieve the AVCC targets for the period 2006-2010. In response, the Murdoch Women's Initiative aims to support our own academic women in developing knowledge and skills to assist their progression to the higher academic levels. Because women may wish to develop particular areas of their academic work, the program below has been designed around three streams of teaching, research, and administration / management. There are a range of session types including short courses over several days, half-day workshops, and lunchtime sessions. Women can attend sessions in all streams, or just in those areas they want to develop. Additional sessions may be added to the program below as they are confirmed.

Aims:

  • to assist academic women in strengthening their professional profiles;
  • to assist academic women to position themselves more effectively for scholarly advancement, including publications and grants; and
  • to build a community/ies of women scholars.

Enrolment Requirements

Enrolment for the session/s you wish to attend is essential, and places are limited.

Please note: These sessions are for current Murdoch University female staff members and are not open to students or the general public.
