Vice Chancellor's Symposium 2006

Scholarship of Engagement

Date: Monday 17th July, 2006
Venue: Kim E Beazley Lecture Theatre (KBLT)

Following the success of the Inaugural Vice Chancellor's Symposium, which focused on 'Linking Teaching and Research', held in November 2005, Murdoch University will hold its second VC's Symposium on 17th July 2006, with the theme 'Scholarship of Engagement'.

The aims of this symposium are to:

  • expand our understanding of the concept of scholarship of engagement
  • provide a forum for discussion: and
  • share examples of engagement by staff in the various Divisions at Murdoch.

Why Engagement?
In 'The Way Ahead' the Vice Chancellor, Professor Yovich, recently pointed out that "more than ever we need to seek to engage and collaborate with business, governments, the professions and the community. Such links can provide the basis for private-public partnerships, can assist in lifting our research profile, and can build the opportunity to better prepare students for the workforce".

This year the Vice Chancellor's Symposium will be using 'Live Classroom', to enable Murdoch staff from non-South Street campuses to hear the presenters, view the presentations and participate in discussion through the text tool.

'Live Classroom' is a WebCT plug-in, which Murdoch is trialling in 2006. 'Live Classroom' can provide full virtual classroom interactions using multi-way audio, application sharing, whiteboard, text chat, polls and quizzes. The complete session including all interactions can be archived. It can also be used for lectures, study groups, meetings and professional development.

If you would like to "participate" in the Symposium and are not based at South Street or will be overseas or interstate on the 17th July, please register via email to R.Tilbrook@murdoch.edu.au by Monday 10th July. Rhondda will provide you with information on how to access the 'Live Classroom' and enable you to be part of the Symposium.

Enquiries and further information to Jennifer Weir, Senior Lecturer, Academic Staff Development, ext 2429 J.Weir@murdoch.edu.au, or Sue Senior S.Senior@murdoch.edu.au ext 2531.

Please note: There is no cost to enrol for the Vice Chancellor's Symposium but I would encourage you to enrol as soon as possible at http://tlcwebapps.murdoch.edu.au/events/academic/general/events/?id=735 so that adequate catering can be arranged.
