Sessional Teachers (Tutors)

Training, Managing and Supporting Sessional Teaching Staff
http://www.tedi.uq.edu.au/sessionalteaching/
This project was funded by the Australian Universities Teaching Committee (AUTC). The project resources are aimed at a variety of audiences from university administrators to sessional tutors and have many useful teaching and learning resources that would be of broad interest. Some of the links, however, are no longer active.

Support for Sessional Teachers
http://www.flinders.edu.au/teaching/support/sessional-teachers/
Flinders University has various resources available for sessional staff, including laboratory demonstrators – see the link to 'Starting off as a Tutor at Flinders University (PDF 369KB)' and 'Demonstrating Laboratory Classes at Flinders University (PDF 163KB)'. These are useful for early career tutors at other universities as well. The site also links to resources such as 'First time teacher?', 'Types of tutorials', 'Tutorial strategies' and 'Solving tutorial' issues.

The resources developed from this Australian Universities Teaching Committee (AUTC) project are useful for academic staff and tutors. Resources include guidelines for managing, supporting and training sessional teaching staff at university, resources and several case studies.

Example of a School/department based initiative for sessional staff
http://www.comp.mq.edu.au/casual_academics/#MUs_webpage
This site has been developed by the Computing Department at Macquarie University. It is a good example of a departmental initiative aimed at providing information and support for sessional tutors. The site includes information concerning time sheets, the names of other tutors and staff, as well a link to download an induction booklet, and a mentoring option.

This special 2007 issue of the UNSW Compendium of Good Practice in Learning and Teaching focuses on sessional/casual teaching. It has many discipline base initiatives to support tutors. Available online at:
